TOGETHER, LET'S MAKE THE ISLAND OF GROIX A HAVEN FOR ALL POLLINATORS!

Call for the protection of the island of Groix and its pollinators

Petition to the French Ministers of Agriculture and Ecological Transition Throughout France, the local ecotypes of honey bees (Apis mellifera mellifera) that have been present for a million years on the territory, have adapted to the local vegetation and conditions, and possess extraordinary capacities of adaptation to diseases, are threatened with extinction by the more intensive practices of agriculture and beekeeping. Beekeepers and scientists on the island of Groix are trying to study and preserve this irreplaceable shared natural heritage, but their work is under daily threat and could be lost without an appropriate legal protection. In order to support their efforts and make Groix a sanctuary for the local black bee and all pollinating insects, I ask you to establish: ➔ a strong legislation, that firmly regulates any import on the island of bees and beekeeping equipment, and prohibits any practice of intensive breeding, such as artificial insemination of queens, genetic manipulation or artificial selection of bee colonies; ➔ a scientific committee of naturalists advising all beekeepers on Groix, and guaranteeing the preservation of local bees and all the pollinating insects present on the island; ➔ dissuasive penalties for those who do not respect these rules, and the means for local authorities to enforce them, in order to make the protection of the precious pollinating insects of Groix and all the floral and animal biodiversity that depends on them possible and sustainable.
