WHEREAS local ecotypes of bees, present on our continent for millions of years, are threatened with extinction throughout Europe by the practices of an intensive agriculture and industrial beekeeping; 

WHEREAS these precious pollinators, adapted to the local climate, flora and conditions, and naturally more disease-resistant, represent an irreplaceable common natural heritage; 

WHEREAS there is currently no legal instrument at a European level to protect these geographical breeds of bees - nor the conservatories that are trying to safeguard them;

WHEREAS the European Parliament, under pressure from citizens and beekeepers, adopted an own-initiative report on Prospects and Challenges for the European Union Beekeeping Sector (2017/2115 (INI)) in March 2018 aiming to "strengthen the legal protection and financial support given to ecotypes and local populations of honeybees throughout the European Union, including the establishment of conservation areas, protected by law, for endemic honeybees" - but to date no concrete measures have been taken.

WE, EUROPEAN CITIZENS ALARMED BY THE MASSIVE DECLINE OF BEES AND ITS DRAMATIC CONSEQUENCES ON OUR FOOD AND ENVIRONMENT, AND CONCERNED WITH THE PRESERVATION OF THESE ESSENTIAL LOCAL BEES FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS, URGE THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION AND MEMBER STATES OF THE EUROPEAN UNION TO ACT ON THE RECOMMENDATIONS OF PARLIAMENT,

• BY URGENTLY PROVIDING A LEGAL PROTECTION FOR THE CONSERVATION AREAS OF THE SUBSPECIES AND ECOTYPES OF APIS MELLIFERA, 

• AND BY IMPOSING A REQUIREMENT TO SAFEGUARD THE HONEY BEES THAT ARE NATIVE TO THE UNION’S TERRITORY, FOR THEIR PATRIMONIAL, ECOLOGICAL AND ECONOMIC VALUE.
