Dear Ministers,

In May 2016, you will vote on the proposal for a "Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on the protection of undisclosed know-how and business information (trade secrets) against their unlawful acquisition, use and disclosure".

This text, drafted by the European Commission together with industry lobbyists—notably the pharmaceutical and agrochemical industries—constitutes a violation of citizens' right to information and the protection of their health and the environment.

Under the pretext of protecting intellectual rights, this directive rules out all future independent scrutiny and control by institutions, individuals or scientists over products sold in Europe, used and consumed by the public every day.

This is an unprecedented attack on the public interest: this is why we, the citizens of the European Union and of the Member States that you represent, ask you to vote against this directive and all other versions that do not defend citizens' right to information that impacts on their health and the environment.

Petition to the Council of the European Union

Vote NO to the "Trade Secrets" Directive
